This seminar examines the common sources of headache and facial pains as related to the temporomandibular joint (TMJ) and muscles of mastication. An overview of clinical anatomy of the TMJ will precede a discussion of common disorders of the TMJ and masticatory muscles. The physical examination used to diagnose temporomandibular and masticatory muscle disorders will be discussed and practiced in lab. The role of the physical therapists and dentists in the nonsurgical management of temporomandibular and masticatory muscle disorders will be reviewed. General discussion will include rationale for use of intraoral appliances and indications for surgery of the TMJ.

  • Perform and interpret the findings of a TMJ evaluation.
  • Identify and discuss the escalating phases of treatment for the management of temporomandibular disorders.
  • Identify the indications for performing intraoral mobilization techniques.
  • Identify and discuss the rationale for using intraoral orthotic appliances.
