The Older Adult with a Neurological Impairment

29 hours, 2.9 CEUs
Tuition: $625 (plus $165 per credit hour if taken for graduate credit)
Prerequisite: none
Who attends: Physical Therapist & Occupational Therapist

Registration Information

The goal of this seminar is to provide participants with the advanced knowledge and skills to adapt examinations, evaluations and interventions to the special needs of the older adult with a neurological impairment. Special emphasis will be on considering individuals with: stroke, Parkinson's disease, Alzheimer's Disease and other neurological pathologies that impact on function.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of this seminar the attendee should be able to:

  • Review the impact of aging on the nervous system.
  • Describe innovations in medical management for neurological conditions typical of the older adult.
  • Utilize appropriate motor learning principles in designing intervention plans for the older adult.
  • Select, modify and interpret results of assessment instruments used to evaluate the older adult with neurological impairments.
  • Design treatment programs for an individual with a neurological impairment or disability including but not limited to stroke, Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease.
  • Integrate interdisciplinary management in the treatment of the older adult with neurological impairments.
  • Analyze safety factors and barrier to function in the discharge environment.
  • Select and apply assistive devices that reflect consideration of functional, economic and psychosocial needs.
  • Use computer technology to meet therapeutic and educational needs of the older adult.
  • Design patient education materials for the older adult with a neurologic problem.
  • Discuss methods to use and add to evidence-based practice for the adult with a neurological impairment.

Day One- 9:00am - 5:00pm Introduction to case studies, aging and the nervous system, innovations in medical management, neuroanatomy review lab

Day Two- 8:00am - 5:00pm Concepts in Neuroplasticity and Motor Learning, Case Study 1 - Evaluation and Treatment for Stroke (perception, motor/balance, UE function, CIMT)

Day Three- 8:00am - 5:00pm Case Study 2 - Evaluation and Treatment for Parkinson's Disease (occupational performance/motor assessment & treatment/respiration/low vision).

Day Four- 8:00pm - 5:00pm Case Study 3 - Evaluation and Treatment for Alzheimer's Disease (cognition mobility, environment and assistive technology). Development of home programs and future research.

Lunch will be on your own.
