The University of St. Augustine's Doctor of Education program provides a multidisciplinary environment to build skills in leadership, academic preparation and enhancement of health sciences education provision, through innovative and individualized education.
Program Objectives
Through completion of this program, students will:
- Demonstrate a comprehensive knowledge of theories in education and their applications to specific areas of the health sciences.
- Demonstrate scholarly writing skills
- Demonstrate pedagogically sound teaching and learning skills.
- Demonstrate the ability to function in professorial track teaching or at high levels of organizational administration
- Utilize advanced research skills directed toward the analysis of knowledge in a given field of health sciences
- Develop skills in professional leadership and health policy
- Produce new knowledge in the area of teaching and learning specific to the health sciences.
Program Overview
Based on today's shortage of health science faculty in higher education, this degree program was designed to offer candidates the opportunity to learn skills necessary for success in the higher education environment. Coursework is structured to meet the unique needs of health science education, in particular those looking to teach in areas such as occupational and physical therapy education, nursing, athletic training and physician assistant programs.
Applicants should hold a Master's degree or a Clinical Doctorate and should have a minimum of three years experience in a clinical setting.
This program is delivered fully online with two on-campus residency experiences. Students will move through their coursework with a cohort of multi-disciplinary clinicians. Core coursework is designed to enhance instructional skills in topics such as curriculum development, educational theory and classroom delivery. Elective courses are designed to offer flexibility in meeting unique student needs. The elective content will allow for Teaching Internships, Directed Studies and a variety of courses in specialty areas. The culmination of the program experience will be a dissertation and comprehensive oral and written examinations.
