Doctor of Health Science (DHSc)

If you would like to make a greater contribution in your field through clinical practice, research, or teaching the next generation of practitioners, our post-professional online Doctor of Health Science (DHSc) program will help prepare you for success. The DHSc will help you understand and adapt scientific knowledge and apply it based on principles of clinical excellence so that you have the opportunity to continue your career as a university administrator, faculty member, clinical researcher, or thought leader.

Our online doctoral program is designed specifically for physical therapists, occupational therapists, and athletic trainers, which means your courses, faculty members, and fellow students are focused on advancing these professions. The university exclusively serves graduate students. It is regionally and nationally accredited, and our PT and OT programs have professional accreditation.

Program Overview

  • The DHSc consists of 60 credits, which may be completed in three (3) to five (5) years.
  • Delivered almost completely online, the program also allows you to fulfill credit requirements with weekend seminars on-campus in San Marcos, California; St. Augustine, Florida; or Austin, Texas.
  • There are 49 core course credits. Of those, 15 are clinical courses that span topics like ergonomics and electrotherapy and spinal instability and differential diagnosis. Additional core course credits may be earned through certifications, residencies, or fellowship programs.
  • The 11 elective credits are completed by taking courses on topics that range from technology in higher education to curriculum development in health sciences education. Elective credits may also be earned through independent studies and teaching internships.
  • The DHSc includes two required on-campus residencies (Thursday – Saturday), which will expose you to guest speakers and allow you to engage in discussions, presentations, and Q&A sessions with your faculty and fellow students in a face-to-face setting.
  • The DHSc culminates with a dissertation, which will allow you to address a real-world problem or make an original contribution to your field.
