St.
Augustine is the nation's oldest city, with more than
four hundred years of history reflecting occupation
by the French, Spanish, British, and, more recently,
the Americans. With its lofty walls and battlements
never defeated, it has been ceded in treaties. Over
a million visitors experience St. Augustine's history
each year. |
|
Careful attention to retaining history and archaeological
digs reflects the pride local residents have in the
city's heritage. Some visitors come to see the fort,
while others marvel at the Spanish architecture, churches,
and Flagler College with its Tiffany glass, or enjoy
the beaches, parks, carriage rides, and a wide selection
of restaurants. There are museums, an Alligator Farm,
and, of course, the usual tourist souvenir shops.
Yet St. Augustine is much more.
St.
Augustine is located on the Intracoastal Waterway
with a nearby opening to the sea with excellent beaches
for swimming and surfing. Boaters enjoy the protected
and offshore waters, salt water fishing for game fish,
or bass fishing along the waterways.

In
1994 the Association of Tennis Professionals (ATP) moved
to nearby Ponte Vedra Beach and constructed the only facility
in the world where tennis players can play on 11 courts
that emulate grand slam tournament conditions. Ponte Vedra
is also home to the Tournament Players Club (TPC) and the
renowned Stadium Course at Sawgrass, built to challenge
the world's best golfers and host to the annual Tournament
Players Championship.
