It was a beautiful, sunny 80-degree day at the St. Augustine, Florida, campus for our third annual alumni event on Saturday, October 18. We couldn’t have ordered a better day!
The day began with an “Escape from the Swamp” event hosted by students raising money for scholarships to attend conferences. The race raised more than $400 and challenged participants’ endurance and skill on USA’s obstacle course, which is designed to test even seasoned athletes.
Continuing education unit sessions were off and running by 10:30 a.m. Drs. Gorniak and W. Conrad hosted an offering in the Anatomy Lab and a leadership/teambuilding session was underway in the Admin Building.
While moms and dads were focused on learning, their kids were well taken care of by students during the Kid U portion of the day. They enjoyed interactive play, crafts, and, of course, the day would not have been complete without some time in the bounce house.
At lunchtime alumni, students, and continuing education S1 seminar participants met on the first floor to hear our keynote speaker, Dr. Carlos Machado. Dr. Machado spent the next hour and a half discussing his incredible journey to becoming a medical illustrator for Netter’s Anatomy. He shared sketches he produced at age 8 (amazing) and 12 (phenomenal). His love for art and medical science was evident and enjoyed by a captivated audience.
Continuing education classes continued throughout the afternoon, and the day ended with a student-led silent auction for St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital and a luau filled with laughter and reminiscing in the Heritage Lounge overlooking a lovely sunset.
