Dr. Stanley Paris (Founder and former President of USAHS) attended the Geriatric Physical Therapy class on St. Augustine’s campus as a guest speaker on Monday, March 4, 2019.
Student in Air Force Reserves Helps Wellness Event
Assistant professor Dr. Nicole Miller, PT, DPOT, OCS, recently volunteered at an event at the March Air Force Reserve Base in Riverside, CA. She was approached by a 4th term student, Janine Bobby, who is in the reserves. Bobby had been collaborating with a physician, also in the Air Force Reserves, to help with an event to promote wellness, exercise, injury prevention and tips for success with the physical fitness test they need to pass annually. Two additional students volunteered at the event and the group performed quick screenings on the re-service members running form and gave tips for preventing injury.
Congrats to students Joy Crawford and Nadine Hanner who presented “Intentional Fieldwork Education” at the South Carolina Occupational Therapy Association’s annual conference. The research was conducted as part of their capstone projects in the Post-Professional Doctor of Occupational Therapy program. View their presentation and handout.
Congratulations to the Miami Bike MS team on their participation in the Escape to Key Largo Event. “Thank you to all who donated and helped Miami achieve their fundraising goal,” said Dr. Gabriel Somarriba. Total raised: $5,165.00
Total distance biked: 150 miles.
Flex Patient/Client Care Management I students spent time with guest speaker Will Roberts. He shared his story of acquiring a spinal chord injury (SCI) and demonstrated how he performs several activities of daily living.
Student Health Fair at Roadrunner Sports
SPTA students hosted a community health clinic in San Diego where they provided free advice, screenings, stretching exercises and information about physical therapy. It was the first of what students hope to be an annual event.
Students in the Speech-Language Pathology (SLP) program had the highest scores in the country this week for the Clinical Skills Training With Virtual Patients simulation, using the Simucase platform. “Your students were learning new skills to help them succeed as clinicians. Please let your students and faculty members know we recognize their hard work. Great job,” wrote Brenda Pantalone, Simucase Manager.
Congrats to the Yellow Class! Their White Coat ceremony took place on the San Marcos campus lawn on Friday, March 15.
OT Hollywood Movie Night
San Marcos OT students and faculty hosted a movie night complete with popcorn, drinks, a red carpet and OT-related film, “Don’t Worry He Won’t Get Far on Foot.”
After the movie students and faculty discussed the role of OTs and how they are portrayed in the film.
DPT Students Volunteer at Local 5Ks
Fourth term students assisted at the Lighthouse 5k put on by the Junior Service League of St. Augustine and fifth and sixth term students assisted with the Vilano Bridge 5k & 10k. Students had the opportunity to use the skills they have learned thus far in the curriculum and provide patient education all while supervised by licensed PTs from Vighetti & Associates Sports Physical Therapy. The students did a fantastic job, and gained valuable experience treating in a sports/orthopedic setting.
