As we celebrate Nurses Month, we at USAHS wanted to get a sense of what a typical workday is like for a nurse manager. We asked alum Ahnnya Slaughter, DNP, to tell us all about a day in her life. Dr. Slaughter graduated in 2021 from USAHS’ Doctor of Nursing Practice program, the Nurse Executive role specialty.
Coming from a military family, she began working at a VA hospital in the Los Angeles area 30 years ago as a critical care RN. “Veterans deserve the best care,” she says. “My calling wasn’t to be in the military. This is my way of being able to serve the country.”
Over the years, she worked her way up, through positions such as informatics specialist, deputy nurse executive, and director of clinical staff development. She began Read more

This week at University of St. Augustine (USAHS), we celebrate versatile, collaborative and vital members of the healthcare community – physician assistants (PAs). October 6-12 is National PA Week. It’s dedicated to raising awareness of the profession and its many contributions to the nation’s health. USAHS is currently in the midst of accreditation review for the new Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies program from the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA). The program is expected to launch in Fall 2019.
“PA Week is an opportunity to reflect on the history of the PA profession and the exciting future PAs have in their role to take care of all populations within the United States and worldwide,” USAHS PA Studies Program Director Graham Danyleyko said.
The profession began when medical care was needed in remote populations where none existed. When a shortage of primary health providers hit the U.S. in the 1960s, universities took action and developed a specialized program. The following three decades focused on establishing the profession, recognizing its contributions to nationwide health and continuing its growth internationally.
Today, PAs are essential members of new health care delivery structures and are part of an in-demand profession. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the job market for PAs is projected to increase by 37% over the next decade, which is much faster than the average occupation.
“The vibrant community of health science educators at University of St. Augustine is very excited about the development of our PA program – the first in San Diego County!” Professor Jeff Williams said. We know that our innovative approach to teaching and learning will make America’s finest city known for producing California’s finest PAs.”
USAHS has a vision to create a dynamic learning experience that will prepare students to become excellent health care providers and leaders in the PA profession.
“I am proud to be a PA and humbly embrace the opportunity to assist in the growth and development of the PA profession,” Danyleyko said.
