- Clinical placement support: Our goal is to help you secure a clinical placement close to your community.The program works to secure externship placements within 75 miles of a student’s home address. If a placement is not available within this distance, students should plan for the possibility of travel or temporary relocation to meet clinical education requirements.

Preparing for Texas SLP License Requirements
If you’re wondering how to become a speech pathologist in Texas, earning a master’s degree is an important first step. Among SLP programs in Texas, our hybrid format combines online coursework with on-campus residencies. These experiences take place during four of the program’s trimesters. You’ll build clinical skills, collaborate with your cohort and train with state-of-the-art equipment in real and simulated settings. Emerge as a confident, practice-ready clinician. Every student completes 400 or more supervised clinical hours across child and adult populations—meeting ASHA and Texas SLP license requirements. 625 observation hours required to be completed by the prospective student on or before orientation date to proceed in the program; 375 direct clinical contact hours earned in the program.
Graduates seeking Texas licensure generally must:
- Earn a master’s degree from an accredited speech-language pathology program
- Complete the required supervised clinical education hours and a supervised postgraduate internship
- Meet Texas’ postgraduate clinical experience requirements
- Meet examination and other requirements established by the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation (TDLR)

Is there an online MS-SLP option for Texas students?
Yes. USAHS’ MS-SLP program is hybrid, primarily online coursework, offered at both the Austin, TX, and Dallas, TX, campuses. The majority of the online is asynchronous, along with synchronous sessions that take place once a week. You attend the campus you selected at the time of enrollment for a 3-day residency, four times throughout the program, for hands-on clinical skills training.
Starting in Summer 2027, we will be offering a MS-SLP (Part-Time) pathway at our Dallas, TX campus. This option is the same program but delivered over 8 terms instead of 5 terms. It is designed for students who need a more manageable academic pace in the early part of the program and allows for greater flexibility for part-time work and personal responsibilities.
How long does it take to become an SLP in Texas?
The USAHS MS-SLP program takes 1 year, 8 months (5 trimesters) or 2 years, 8 months (8 trimesters) for our MS-SLP (Part-time) format. After graduating, Texas requires completion of a Clinical Fellowship Year (CFY) under a temporary/provisional license before you’re eligible for full state licensure.
Can I apply to more than one USAHS campus?

Cohorts range from 30–55 students, progressing through the program together.
What are the admission requirements for the Austin or Dallas MS-SLP program?

What's it like to live and study in Austin or Dallas as an SLP student?
You don’t actually need to live in either city; the program is mostly online, and you’ll only travel to campus for four 3-day residencies for hands-on clinical skills training across the program. But when you do visit for residencies or if you want to live nearby, Austin is known for its creative culture, lakes, greenbelts, and live music scene; Dallas (the campus is in nearby Las Colinas/Irving) sits in a city known for medical research, top-tier hospitals, and a thriving biotech industry.
