Driven to learn from every experience, Doctor of Physical Therapy alum Anton Asknder discovered during his clinical rotation with the Miami Dolphins that excelling as a sports physical therapist requires much more than technical expertise.
Anton Asknder (DPT ’24) embarked on his USAHS journey with a focused goal: to pursue a career in sports physical therapy (PT). His dream advanced significantly when he landed a clinical rotation with the Miami Dolphins, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity that reinforced his aspirations and propelled his PT knowledge to new heights.
From his first day at USAHS, Asknder actively connected with his professors, aiming to build relationships that could grow into mentorships. “I told one of my professors, who I consider a mentor that I want to work in sports and would be interested in applying to any pertinent opportunities.” When the Miami Dolphins’ team physical therapist, a USAHS alum, reached out for student recommendations, Asknder’s professor suggested him for one of the first clinical rotation spots. “I stayed open to guidance from mentors, both personal and professional, and that openness led to this incredible opportunity,” Asknder shares.
Hands-On Learning and Growth
Each day of his clinical rotation brought unique learning opportunities and challenges, ranging from managing athletes with new injuries to supporting long-term rehabilitation plans. With access to state-of-the-art facilities and equipment, Asknder had countless opportunities to deepen his PT knowledge and translate classroom concepts into hands-on experience.
“As a student working under the team physical therapist, I was like a sponge,” Asknder shares. “I absorbed everything, observing and learning how different athletes approached the treatment of their injuries.” His responsibilities included performing manual therapy, strength and conditioning exercises, and soft tissue work, allowing him to gain valuable insights into the multifaceted demands of sports PT.
Understanding the Elite Athlete’s Unique Needs
In addition to honing his technical skills, Asknder deepened his understanding of the critical role trust plays in the patient-physical therapist relationship.
“Some players are more willing to accept you as a new clinician, while others are less trusting because they know one poor decision from a PT could impact their career,” he says. “I just stayed adaptable and professional, treating them as friends as well as athletes, which garnered rapport over time.”
Asknder discovered that elite athletes are unique from other patient populations due to their expertise in their bodies. “You have to be more educated than they are, ready to explain the ‘why’ behind everything you do for them. This is their career, and every move you make directly impacts them.”
The Road Ahead: Continuing the Journey
This transformative experience confirmed Asknder’s passion for sports PT and gave him confidence in his ability to thrive in such a high-stakes setting. “It really solidified my passion and showed me that I belong in a setting like this,” he says.
Looking back on his student years, Asknder emphasizes the importance of taking advantage of every opportunity, building relationships with professors, and getting involved. “Being part of the student organization Sports SIG was huge for me,” he says. “I learned a lot by working with professors who are now mentors and participating in programs outside the classroom.”
Asknder’s journey is just beginning. Next, he will take the physical therapy boards and interview with sports residency programs. His ultimate goal is clear: “To get back into the training room working with athletes.
