Students Present Business Plans to Better the Community

Occupational and physical therapy students worked together to create sustainable solutions.

University of St. Augustine for Health Sciences occupational and physical therapy students enrolled in the Administration and Management course on the St. Augustine campus, instructed by Dr. Sheri Montgomery, Dr. Gayla Aguilar, and Dr. Margaret Nonnemacher, recently presented business plans and project proposals they spent the trimester developing.

They were asked to consider the Affordable Care Act (ACA), and focus on community outreach or expanding an existing therapy practice. Groups first came up with the initial proposal, then developed a mission statement and objectives, wrote an executive summary, and created organizational charts, market analysis, and strategies. The students designed exhibits to display their projects, which were judged by faculty at the spring 2015 business expo held on campus.

Local community members Beth Dunn, regional manager for Select Rehabilitation; Wesley Graham, assistant vice president, regional bank private manager for Wells Fargo; and Wayne Efford, Chick Fil A franchise owner, donated their time to serve as judges for the competition. To select the winning team, judges determined the students’ level of expertise and knowledge related to their plans, and voted for the presentation most likely to be successfully implemented and positively impact the community.

“This Is How We Roll,” a community adaptive sports program teams for individuals with unique needs or disabilities created by students Lucy Hudson, Dani Rutledge, Jenna Fox, Katie Hansell, Karla Vogel, Lindsay Fitzpatrick, Gabby Jordan, and Carleigh Kidwell (shown below), was selected to receive the Faculty Choice Award.
