No matter which MOT program format you choose, it will require 82 credit hours, including:

  • Virtual and/or in-person didactic coursework

You can expect to work with real and mock clients in simulation labs and complete supervised fieldwork in diverse settings.

Is there a mandate to eliminate the Master of Occupational Therapy (MOT) degree and require the Doctor of Occupational Therapy (OTD) to practice?

No, there is no mandate to move the entry-level OT degree to an OTD.

  • In 2017, there was a plan to move toward requiring the OTD.
  • In 2019, that decision was reversed.

Since then, schools have decided which degree(s) to offer. Some offer only the OTD, some the MOT, and others, like USAHS, offer both degrees.

At USAHS, students like you have a choice:

  • MOT Degree: Great for those who want to focus on clinical practice.
  • OTD Degree: A good fit for anyone interested in leadership, teaching, advanced clinical practice or research roles.

Both degrees will prepare you to become a licensed occupational therapist.

For more details, check out ACOTE’s official statement:

“There is NO mandate regarding OT doctoral-degree-level education. Institutions can decide to transition the occupational therapy program to the doctoral degree level, remain at the master’s degree level, or offer both degree options.”
