We continue to complete the clean-up and safety assessments of the Miami and St. Augustine campuses in preparation of resuming classes and normal operations.
Both campuses will open on Friday, September 15 at 8 a.m. and liberal leave will be in effect for staff and faculty who wish to access the campus and prepare for class. Core faculty and course leads should bring course syllabi/schedules as well as personal schedules to planning meetings in order to ensure that all lecture, online and lab content is accounted for.
For flex students at both the Miami and St. Augustine campuses, labs remain canceled for this weekend. Faculty are working diligently to develop an alternative weekend schedule. Additional information will be forthcoming from the program directors shortly.
Classes will resume on Monday, September 18.
Making Up Coursework and Labs
The academic team is working to create a plan to facilitate the make-up of lost class and lab sessions, which may include class time over the weekend. If you have an Internet connection, you can access online courses. Online coursework should continue as normal when possible. Some faculty may have difficulty accessing their course materials as they may be evacuating or negatively impacted by the storm. Although faculty respond to emails within 48 hours, some may not be able to meet that requirement because of the storm. Please be patient if your instructors cannot access their online courses. Students needing extra time or extensions on assignments because of severe weather should make those requests directly to faculty.
Campus Open Saturday and Sunday
Both campuses will be open on Saturday and Sunday to allow students and faculty to utilize the facilities and internet access to complete assignments and other workin preparation for the return to class on Monday, September 18.
On the St Augustine campus, the Academic Building (the student furniture areas, Rooms 203 and 204, and the Heritage Lounge) will be open on Saturday, September 16 and Sunday, September 17 from 7 a.m. to 10 p.m. The library will be open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and on Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. The Wellness Center will be open on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Sunday from 12 noon to 8 p.m.
Update on IT Systems and Services
All systems and services on both the Miami and St. Augustine campuses have been returned to full operations with one exception on the Miami campus. The primary internet circuit in Miami, provided by Comcast is not operational. USAHS IT is in contact with Comcast on estimated date of service restoration. Comcast has updated their system recovery estimate to Friday, September 15 at 7:20pm EDT.
In the meantime, we are running all internet activity over our backup internet circuit provided by ATT. While we will be able to provide a quality baseline internet connection, you may notice degraded internet speeds during this Comcast outage. We ask that all Miami employees and students limit their internet usage to activities that are directly related to school and work responsibilities. We also ask that all issues with internet, or any other IT systems or services, be directed to the USAHS Help Desk at x7000 or Support@usa.edu.
We will keep our entire Florida community in our thoughts as the recovery from Hurricane Irma continues. Please do not hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns.
